Review
About a couple days ago i get my own HP mini 1001 TU model, im in love from the first time i see HP Mini 1000 series, far as i go with my new HP Mini i love the whole thing from design, comfortable keyboard size as 92% from real size of normal keyboard, light weight it’s only 1.11 Kg and it will make easy for everyone to carry on to anywhere anytime, new changes from the previous HP Mini model (as we know HP 2133) at HP mini 1000 family series they change the size of adapter to smaller size and the big thing and i’m sure everyone will surprise and love it, this HP mini 1000 series family support with 3G Modem make easier to connect or browse the internet anywhere, and comes with Windows XP operating system, as a test for speed and everything i did upgrade to Windows Vista Ultimate, All working perfectly smooth, but some driver you need to download manually, like Bluetooth (i use generic driver from windows vista and it’s working), Graphics (Download it from intel website and search from “Mobile Inel 945 Express Chipset Family”) and then you can run AERO smoothly. there’s one bug i found on this product when i try to see how’s webcam quality, but all i see it’s only black on my screen, but dont worry i found it how to get it fixed and it’s working. let me tell this product description first then we fix the webcam bugs

Hardware fix for XP (remove the lens protector, but do it very carefully)

use thin plastic card to pull the LCD protector, do it very carefully or you crack the LCD protector. then take the lens protector ( it’s taped inside the camera hole). Then the camera should be working perfectly now.

Software fix for XP

Open Device manager from your control panel, then Right click on USB video device and select uninstall.

Then install the Webcam driver from here : ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp33501-34000/sp33544.exe
Then install the Bios update from here : ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp41501-42000/sp41906.exe

Note that the webcam driver was installed with a fresh reboot prior to installing the bios upgrade.

xxdejavu, did you get the internal mic to work in Vista? That is the only thing keeping me from using Vista on the Mini (and maybe the long hibernation time, but I guess that can’t be fixed).

yes i’m running XP on my HP Mini, the webcam is dark, but I tried using it in Movie Maker and you have control of the webcam settings (brightness, contrast, etc.) So why didn’t HP build a control panel for the webcam?? External webcams come with some kind of control panel for fine tuning purposes. So that my rant

hi all, i have bad news and good news
good news is, yes you can fix the camera thing and the bad news is, to get camera fixed, you need to open the LCD lid a little bit on the camera side, and remove the camera protector film which i just did mine couple days ago and after that worked like normal camera, i’ll post some picture how to do that ASAP, but you have to do it very carefully, or you crack the LCD cover, it’s your call :)

For jody, i need to know what is you PID and VID on your webcam (try to see from Device Manager), it may help to hunt your driver, or you can try with generic driver from windows.

    GOOD NEWS!!! for XP users…

No need to open up your laptop and risk cracking your lcd just to fix the webcam.

First, download windows live messenger. After installing, sign in for the msgr. In the msgr window click the show menu icon. then click tools then audio video setup. In the audio video setup window click next, on the next window click webcam settings then adjust the brightness of th webcam since its default is 0. adjust other components if you like. after that save settings. close the messenger and try your webcam, it should not be dark anymore!!!

I just purchased the HP mini and I do found out that the webcam is set on 0 as its default settings for XP. Theres no need to download any drivers for the solution on this one. For yahoo messenger users, open first your webcam by clicking the action tab and select view my webcam, then click on the messenger tab of the YM window, scroll down and locate preferences. Click on preferences, a new window will appear and click on the webcam. Click on the camera settings and select the desired brightness that you like. SInce the cam is only at 1.3 pixel it is not quite a good quality..but atleast you can be seen in a room light…

    Hey guys,

    I found a great deal on http://www.MemorySticksPro.com for 2gb 4gb 8gb and 16gb memory sticks.

I purchased one 2-3 days back and already received it so the deal seems sound. I am bargain hunter and I
looked all over ebay, amazon, buy.com, etc. but this was the cheapest I found so thought I’d share with
everyone as my first post on this forum ever.

Hope it helps! Give me some reps!

Looking to be a contributing member here!

Ya..HP still keep shut in matter how to solve the problem..Actually, to fix the cam just need to take off the small piece of lens protector behind the LCD. However, HP just tells, small lens protector is to protect the cam, but they do not know the impact from that lens protector, because it decreases the brightness almost 70%. So if u dare to fix ur laptop and u having a skillful hand..just do it ur self. If you waiting for HP response, I think u gonna waste ur time between u and ur new HP 1000.

i tried ur way and took off the lens protector. i wasn’t so careful with mine but it really would take a lot of force for someone to crack that lcd protector. be careful when pulling out the tape. mines left some of the sticky goo n it smeared across the camera hole. a qtip and warm water got it out. much improvement… no more darkness. thanks man

Taking out the LCD thing was easy I guess. For those of you who think you’ll break the Laptop, you wont it has a thing to open and click shut., I guess they wanted u to figure it out yourself, anyhow, That small piece of film covering the webcam made a huge difference in brightness. victoriangoctrinh@yahoo.com

I used the driver, and the webcam works perfectly after it says to restart my computer. Anytime after that, all it does is give me a blank gray screen when I try to bring it up. It works if I constantly reinstall the driver, but it gets very annoying after a while.
